In Memory

I’ve got to tell you
how I’ll always love you.
I think of this on dry
evenings with smoke

in my head – the bath
is never hot enough
here and the cool madness
damp the black tailcoat

wounds me – I need you
and glance across the skyline
at the lifeless month.

At night on the tracks
the trains hum like
bees and I am lonesome
thinking of jazz.

I miss you always
when I hear the Beatles sing
the songs are wet with
tears that aren’t mine –

Although I never cry
and hold you in my
mind with a breezy
reality I don’t understand.
